Debuting her Spring/Summer 2014 collection at New York Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham smiled with both relief and excitement after showing a thoroughly new look for this term. With David and Harper Beckham sitting alongside Vogue’s Anna Wintour and superstar stylist Rachel Zoe, it’s clear that this was one of the week’s headlining shows.
Since launching her eponymous fashion line in 2008 to critical acclaim, Victoria Beckham’s designs have catered to the crisp and immaculate styling of the uptown girl with form fitting gowns, cinched silhouettes, beautifully cut tailoring and outerwear, as seen on celebrity fans such as Cameron Diaz and Elle Macpherson.
Victoria Beckham’s Current A/W 2013 Collection
Fast forward from that classic Park Avenue styling to September 2013 where thoroughly modern and downtown looks were shown on the catwalk. With a fuss-free palette of black and white and pops of fuchsia, dove grey and burgundy it had a sporty edge that was more boy-meets girl than Beckham’s usual red carpet glamour. Cocooned jackets with soft shoulders, flirty pleated mini-skirts, racer back necklines and buttoned-up shirts were key pieces. Other looks included almost-hitting-the-knee Bermuda shorts and silky baseball jackets; very cool. The buttoned up shirt appeared in many guises: classic white with short sleeves, with sheer panels, boasting a cool geometric print and bright colour block detailing. Take note, the crisp white shirt is the must-buy of the season.
It was the most exciting show of Beckham’s to date because it shouted a new look and exciting departure from the safety of her usual chic sophistication. Now that she has proved her versatility as a designer, is there anything super-Vic can’t do?
