Yes really, how to style dungarees as an adult; no they’re not just for kids or the 1990s. I’ve personally loved dungarees since Christmas 1996 when my sister bought me a pair from Gap that were fleece-lined – can you imagine the cosy comfort? Dungarees are oft-seen as a uniform of millennial hipsters who adopted them for their cool and lazy ease, unisex style and slouchy fit. What I love about dungarees and their cousin the boiler-suit is that in choosing to wear them your outfit is nearly complete; simply add great shoes, a blazer, statement earrings and you’re dressed! In this How to Style Dungarees video I want to show you that they can be cool, elegant and classy without any irony.
The fit: This is important. You want them to fit like a great pair of jeans and that is snug on the bum and thighs and then flare-out into the trouser.
The leg: Personally, I absolutely love a cropped-flare at the moment (as you can see in the above video) because I think it is flattering on the thighs (slimming) and ideal to show off a great pair of boots or heels.
The wash: Keep it dark in either indigo or black for a more sophisticated look; lighter denim and white are less flattering.
Styling rule: For me, you can’t go wrong by styling dungarees with cool basics like a white shirt, tee and a military jacket or stripes (see the looks below.) If you are new to the dungaree and want to play it safe, experiment and make a statement with bold accessories: patent boots, embellished brocade loafers, oversized hoops, an animal print cross-body bag – this is where you can inject your flair and style personality.
I’ve trawled the internet to find some of my favourite styles that I think will make a smart autumn investment; have a look below and tell me what you think!
