Five of my Favourite | Trench Coats

Wearing Topshop’s Belted Coat | Now £79 in the sale

It’s hard not to get too excited about the season changing; the clocks go forward and you feel owed longer days and better weather; wishful thinking! There are some items hanging in my wardrobe that aren’t just wardrobe staples, they’re my armour and at this time of year that shifts from a winter parka to a spring trench. Ever since it was worn by style icon (an overused word but in this context, wholly appropriate) Audrey Hepburn in that final scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the trench is recognised as a timelessly stylish piece that can be cinched over every outfit. I love the design and hang of a trench: the structured collar, storm flaps, belt and often long-length that feels feminine and a little retro. I recently bought a Prince of Wales check trench from Topshop that has tan and blue running through it and ties on the sleeve; its light fabric and subtle mix of colours feels so fresh after months of wearing black; The Sunday Times Style’s Wardrobe Mistress Jane McFarland agrees too.

After finding that checked trench in the Topshop sale rails, I thought I’d see what other designs have sprung this spring (most unimaginative turn of phrase I know;) here are some of my findings from classic to coloured and leather.
